Colleen Weaver
Colleen Dream Weaver (she/they) is a multimedia artist from Denver, CO. With 20+ years of art education and working as a professional artist. Colleen likes to create and to destroy. Many of their art pieces focus on dismantling absurd cultural constructs, leaning heavily on ironic feminism and thought-provoking satires of everyday life. She is also a practicing witch and has combined art and magic in ways that are inspiring, healing and mystifying.
Colleen has found that ceramics is a wonderful art medium for magic people, there is contact with the earth every day, and a relationship forms between sculptor and clay that is symbiotic and therapeutic. They like to allow the clay to go where it needs to go while also gently coaxing the clay into a desired shape. There is a harmonious balance of knowing how much water is needed, how long to slow-dry clay and the firing process is full of chemistry and possibilities.
Though Colleen is currently focusing on ceramics, she has worked as a Digital Illustrator, Special Makeup Effects Artist, Oracle Deck Creator, Divination Tool Creator, Master Crocheter, Costumer, Performing Artist (music, acting, burlesque, puppetry), Writer and Book Creator. She’s curated art parties and managed bands, been on tours, won awards and has met a lot of creative mentors in the process.
Colleen’s favorite takeaway from working with artists is that it’s ok to take risks, try new things, push the boundaries, ask “why not?” , FAFO. Our mistakes are our greatest teachers so if we want to learn something then we need to jump in and do it. And after years of experience with critiques, Colleen has learned to appreciate feedback in all forms, finding the most pleasure in creating art and then observing how others react.
At present Colleen is the featured artist at Fire on The Mountain (April through June). Colleen can also be found on horror movie sets creating prosthetic injuries, splatter effects and even props. She is also a member of the ceramics studio at Bicentennial Arts Center where you can find her almost every day tirelessly playing in the mud. Colleen is creating a series called “Barbaric” , ceramic vases made using a pattern from a Barbie torso, blown up and strangely altered. Their vision is to one day have a solo show exhibiting her series of vases with fresh flowers along with interactive performance art.
