Principles for group consultation
The collaborative investigation of reality
Group consultation might have a variety of outcomes: a plan of action, a solution to a problem, or coming to a common understanding or unified vision
An idea once expressed, belongs to the group, not the individual who expressed it , opening both the individual and collective to unexpected possibilities.
The spark of truth comes from a clash of ideas, not personalities
Diversity of styles, cultural norms, and life experiences is a strength
The interplay of diverse points of view can approach more objective truths
Inquiry into data, informed expertise, experience and spiritual/ethical principles lead to more successful outcomes than mere opinion.
All participate frankly, but with love, courtesy and respect
Listening to understand, not respond, leads to more inclusive outcomes
Choosing not to take offense is a more constructive choice
Consensus is more desirable than compromise, although majority vote is acceptable if necessary
When all embrace the outcome and whole-heartedly work to carry it out, flaws that arise can more readily be identified and addressed on reflection together.
