Each pair of boots is patterned from scratch to fit the customer's leg perfectly, starting with a tape casting. While a sewing machine is used to attach the leather pieces together, everything else is done by hand, including the leather tooling, painting, skiving, soling, and lace braiding. The tooled boots include several layers of appliques, edged in gold, to invoke the colors and feeling of an illuminated manuscript of medieval Europe, while the cherry blossom boots include sculptural appliques inspired by the Ming Dynasty and the leather rosettes popular on French footwear during King Louis XIV's reign.
