Rebecca Ward

Painter. Coddiwomple traveler.

I grew up at the base of the Rocky Mountains, and have a deep connection to the land. We travel the West in our van, Celeste, exploring canyons, alpine meadows, snowy peaks, and vast grasslands. These experiences influence my paintings, sometimes appearing as landscapes, other times as abstract impressions of place.

My work evokes the sweeping beauty of the West—buffalo clouds, rolling thunderstorms, towering mountains, deep forests, grassy plains. I am wonderstruck by expanse, and awe inspires the work. My paintings are evocations of place, not referential. I prioritize emotional space over fidelity to a scene, allowing the texture and movement of the surface to carry the feeling of place.

I work with oil and cold wax, a medium that allows for rich layering and texture while maintaining the durability of oil. My surfaces‚Äîcradled birch panels crafted in my studio and oil paper‚Äîoffer a buttery matte finish, distinct from the glossy sheen of traditional oils. Through bold color, scraping through layers, and line, I embrace the presence of the works history, creating a tactile, immersive experience.  My technique is vibrant and expressive, revealing my hand.

I have my degree in studio art from Colorado State University, where I built a strong foundation in technique and composition. I later became a graphic designer for print and web before returning fully to painting, compelled by my love for texture, movement, and the natural world which continues to inspire me.
