I incorporate used carbon typewriter ribbon into my collage work-sourced from libraries, schools, workplaces, and personal
machines. I am fascinated by the ribbon's occasionally reversed characters, random phrases, encrypted messages, and symbols. As a tribute to the dollar sign itself, I enlarged a dollar sign that was once typed by a typewriter. I filled the symbol with used typewriter ribbon containing repeated typed dollar signs, making a structure composed entirely of its own image (I find a quiet humor in this). However, taken out of context, the dollar sign is an icon worthy of tribute and scrutiny. On one level, the symbol is cold, transactional, and utilitarian-a global emblem of commerce, power, and consumption. Yet the pattern within softens and transforms it into something decorative or seductive.
